Chicago Nights

So, the inspiration this week at You'll Shoot Your Eye Out?

Song-Ography ~ Up On The Roof

The song brings back the memory of me as a kid .. alone in my room.. listening to the radio late at night.  I loved that song!  Imagining what it would be like to live in a city with concrete surfaces all around.  Loud noises of cars and buses intent on getting to their destinations.  People's conversations drifting up from the pavement below.  Such a stark contrast to where I lived in Connecticut, where we were surrounded by acreage and the houses were buffered by statuesque trees!  Oh, how I wanted to go out into the world and live this completely different lifestyle!

Who would have thought that, many years later, my dreams would come true!  Chicago!  Great city with energy that jolts right through you! Towering concrete buildings creating winding canyons all around the city.  Lights blazing... taxis careening around corners... people walking Michigan Avenue until the wee hours of the morning.  And my favorite way to enjoy the city? At night, when I am part of that "hustlin' crowd", stopping for a moment to look straight up at the roof tops ablaze in color.  Making me feel so alive!

  1. I love Chicago and your photo!! I will be going there in November for the 4th year in a row, and I'm really REALLY hoping to actually get out into the city this year and really experience it. I would especially love to see the city lights while I'm there as well! Thank you for this glimpse!

  2. I was only in Chicago once - for my son's wedding. We spent Christmas Eve in a hotel on Michigan Avenue. The day after Christmas my daughter and I hit the shops looking for a dress for her for the wedding. She had ordered a dress from JCrew after trying it on in a different color in the store. The one that arrived didn't fit. We found it at Bloomingdales which was our first stop so we got to look around a bit before meeting my husband at a great place for deep dish pizza. He spent the morning at the Art Institute. We only had 4 nights, 5 days there, but it was so much fun.

  6. You know I have never been to Chicago - weird huh? Been to NYC oodles of times, but Chicago - just 7 hours away - never.

Need to change that sometime very soon. I love really big cities to visit!

Both my sisters lived in CT for years - one in Glastonbury and I can't remember the other town now, lol, my memory is horrible sometimes. It was West something I think. It was really beautiful wherever it was.

  7. What a wonderful shot of Chicago. I've only flown over it and landed at O'Hare airport (which was pretty cool) but never visited the city. Such pretty lights in this shot. I'm a small town girl and love it that way but someday it would be fun to just visit the big city.

  8. Oh my, this photo is PERFECT! It has such a vibance to it, which screams BIG CITY! Fantastic capture. So where in the Chicago area do you live? My BFF just recently re-located to Evanston. I can't wait to visit her again because there is soooo much in Chicago I want to photograph. Thank you for joining up in Song-ography this week. And BTW...your photography is fantastic :)

  12. I am afraid that I am in the same position, as Michele! I have never visited Chicago. I have been to so many great cities, here and in Europe, but never Chicago!! I love cities and have to share what my granddaughter wrote in her travel diary once. She was seven and we were in Barcelona, Spain. She wrote that the city sounds were like "music" to her. Oh, that dear girl - she so "gets it". Love your photo!!

  14. I also grew up in a very quite area, Vermont. I, too listened to my radio every single night, guess all that quite was a little much for me.
I do love a city, my favorite place is New York city of course, been there a handful of times now, can't get enough of it, everything there is so fantastic!
I wanted to thank you for stopping by my creative space blog post. It is always great to have you stop by.
    Hugs
    Michele

  15. I grew up both in the country and the city, and each time living somewhere I always had to go and visit the other as I missed it. Today, we live in the old part of the suburbs and so perfectly smacked in the middle of the two sides... Today I went for a ride out to the country side and just smell hay and farm fields... Tomorrow its down town and that's a whole different smell, not too fond of it but I love the what you called it "feeling alive" part. Well they both make me feel alive, but in such two very different ways. Great picture of the cityscape, love the different lights.

  20. Our son and our DIL live there and I absolutely love visiting them. They live in a high rise right by Michigan Ave. They leave their windows open and we can hear all the sounds of the night through the screens - I love it! Glad you are experiencing it finally. Is that where you moved to?
